British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
