Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader security environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
