Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
