Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious health risks”.
