The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
